SCARBOROUGH is a step closer to having three new dog wardens after councillors agreed to push ahead with proposals.
A report was presented to Scarborough Council's overview and scrutiny committee after public concerns were raised about dog fouling and a number of attacks on Scarborough's beaches.

After reviewing the current arrangements, the task group responsible for the report, Scarborough Council's Dog Warden Service Task Group, found the service to be inadequate and called for vast improvements.

The recommendation to take on three in-house dog wardens, responsible for issues such as dog fouling, strays, dangerous dogs, education and animal welfare, was passed unanimously by committee members.

A bid for £50,000 has already been placed for council funding to set up the improved services.

The report was presented by task group chairman Cllr Joe Plant, who said: "It's a very big responsibility of the council and we aren't delivering.

"It's crucial that we get the in-house dog warden service."

His findings were supported by Andy Skelton, head of environmental services, who said: "This report is very powerful in terms of its recommendations.

"We are spending virtually all our resources at the moment on catching strays. We want to work at engendering responsible dog ownership with the general public."

Cllr Tim Lawn, of Esk Valley ward, said: "Dog-related problems are a major concern for every ward in this borough, and £50,000 would be excellent value for money."

Derwent Valley ward councillor Mick Jay-Hanmer added: "I find the system crazy that we've got. This should have been up and running long before now."

Until 2002 the council's dog warden service comprised three full-time wardens undertaking a full range of enforcement work.

In 2006 the remaining warden was transferred to another role within the authority and since that time a basic dog warden service has been operated by an external contractor.

The final decision will be taken by member's of Scarborough Council's cabinet at a meeting next month.

That another fine mess S.B.C has got the town into. Although six years of s**t (in its real sense)on the streets, timewise, is less than some of the other messes they have had both feet in.

councillor joe plant said "its a very big responsibility of the council and we aren't delivering"

i was going to add something like so from now on your dog is better represented by your local councillor than what you are, but actually i think what councillor plant said sums up SBC entirely, they should adopt is as their motto

Well said Badger.
Changing the motto from 'A great place to live, work & play' to 'it's a very big responsibility of the council and we aren't delivering' reflects the true state of affairs that S.B.C have inflicted on Scarborough.

it answers a question many of us have been wondering for a long time

Nice picture, which shows our councillors being overviewed and scrutunised by one of the brotherhood of council officers on a fat salary.
This an example of the contempt with which the band of officers view the taxpayers elected representatives, dog walkers!

"daft I call it"

Is "dog owner Lisa Skelton" any relation to "Andy Skelton, head of environmental services"?

Other than the rather corny photo-opportunity, this is good news in my opinion. Too many dog owners allow their beasts to roam free around the town, also fouling is a problem that has been discussed here many times before.

It's a shame we need to spend £50,000 of Council Tax payers' money to alleviate the problem caused by a minority of selfish dog-owners, but yes we do need to spend this money on wardens.

If there were no illegal parking, we wouldn't need traffic wardens: if there were no crime, we wouldn't need policemen; etc.

Personally I think that we need more Wardens. Not to fine people for letting their dog fouls the verges ect, but to actually tackle the problem of so called "Status Symbol" dogs. I for one have had run ins with these type of animals and luckily not been bitten but come close to it. Young people and I mean young people ( The dogs are walking them not the other way round!!!) have these unmuzzled animals as a symbol of who they think they are and how "hard" they think they are. Dont they realise that these dogs historically were bred purly to kill other animals and other dogs. Perhaps if the problem of anti social dog ownership was tackled properly these wardens will help. But where are they and how do I get hold of one if I see a person, Child ect being attacked, and what power do they have?? alot of the owners of these dogs need their heads examining and maybe shown a video of what these animals have the capability of doing. Much like a drink Driver gets to watch a video tape of drink related fatalities.

Traffic wardens are now called 'civil enforcement officers', will the name of dog wardens change to 'canine enforcement officers' or perhaps 'super dooper pooper scoopers'.
