HIGHER car parking charges could be on the way in Scarborough, under new fund-raising proposals being drawn up.
The proposed changes from next November include increased fees for using popular short-stay car parks such as North Street, St Thomas Street and West Pier.

Charges could also be introduced during the winter months on Marine Drive and Royal Albert Drive – which have always enjoyed free parking from November to February.

Scarborough Council is also considering raising the cost of on-street parking throughout the town, residents' permits and tradesmen's permits.

The council has admitted that it needs to rely on the money it can rake in from imposing car parking fees.

Concerns about the impact of raising tariffs in winter but keeping them the same during high season were raised by former mayor and Castle ward councillor, Janet Jefferson.

She said: "We're proposing to take away a concession away from residents for four months of the year. We would be penalising local residents.

"I would propose that the low charges remain the same."

From next year, for example, Marine Drive car parking which is currently free would cost £1 for four hours, and parking in areas such as North Street would increase from £2.20 to £2.50 for two hours.

Could there be another reason for the rise in charges?
Park and ride springs to mind.

This creates quite a dilema in our house shall we sell the car and save the new parking charges to buy a north side hotel, or should we keep the car and give SBC the parking fees, financially it will probably work out the same.

SBC are going to kill off our town centre. Have they not learned anything over recent times? Woolies like many other retailers are struggling just like the rest of us. Any increases are not welcome. People do not want park and ride and want to drive into town and pay a nominal fee for it.

Those who will will just go to retail complexes at York or a far, where you can park for free and get more choice. Its really a no brainier but they just will not learn

Its about time the powers at be too a reality check. You are protected from the real world with over inflated wages and very generous pensions, mean while the rest of us are worried about loosing our jobs and well most will only get state pension

instead of looking in their own back yard to make efficiences (and I do not mean front line service providers either). I often wonder how many more 'managerial' positions have been created in the last 10 years...has it relly benefited any of us?

Surprise,Surprise.VAT reduced and car parking goes up.The country in Recession and its just another tax increase.
The normal citizen is getting restless with these increases. It is becoming apparent to most that demonstrations peaceful or even unruly must be around the corner.Enough is enough.
