TRIBUTES have been paid to a former Scarborough rugby player turned actor, who died from asbestos-related cancer.
David Nicholls, 58, played for Scarborough Rugby Club for several years from the mid-1980s before going on to appear in such blockbuster movies as Gangs of New York and Gladiator.
He died from the lung disease mesothelioma. It is believed Mr Nicholls had been exposed to asbestos in his teens while working at a factory in Tipton, West Midlands.
At an inquest at Leeds Coroners Court, deputy assistant coroner Melanie Williamson recorded a verdict that he had died of industrial disease.
Mr Nicholls, of Armley in Leeds, played roles in films such as Gladiator with Hollywood star Russell Crowe, and Muppet Treasure Island.
He also had parts in a range of TV productions including Emmerdale, Coronation Street, Waiting for God and The Commander.
The performer's stage presence was well known due to his 6ft 5in height.
Before moving to Leeds to further his acting career, he played rugby in Scarborough and lived in Robin Hood's Bay.
He played second row forward and worked his way through the lower sides to establish himself in Scarborough 1sts.
Club president Colin Rennard, who played alongside Mr Nicholls as a second row forward, said: "He was a troubadour, an entertainer and was extremely well liked.
"He was friendly, outgoing and always had time for everyone. He was a reliable, committed rugby player."
Club trustee and former president Steve Hamblett also played rugby with Mr Nicholls in the Vikings.
He said: "He was a larger than life character and liked a good laugh. He used to have his guitar in the back of a Land Rover. When the games finished, the guitar came out and we all had a good sing song.
"When he left the club he won his Equity card and went on with his acting."
